Project description

Reason for planning
Schäfflestrasse no longer came up to standard in terms of design and facilities in this heritage-listed working class district. Traffic areas in need of renovation and too focused on automobiles, as well as lighting that was too dark no longer met requirements. With regard to the quality of the adjoining plazas there was room for improvement. Consequently, a planning workshop was initiated.

Development area
Schäfflestrasse is at the heart of the former workers’ housing estate in the Riederwald district. The character of the road is essentially determined by the mature trees lining it, the old gas street lighting, and the uniform design of the front gardens of the heritage perimeter buildings. From a functional point of view, with the adjoining plazas Schäfflestrasse defines the character of the quarter. Along Schäfflestrasse there are social facilities (churches, a community center, kindergarten, sports ground), as well as some retail stores.

Planning objective
The objective behind the plans in place is to restructure the road in terms of design and function and the adjoining plazas such as to strengthen the existing facilities and enhance the appeal of public spaces while taking functional traffic requirements into consideration.
In this context the circumstances and dimensions of the street were adapted to the needs of the respective users, and barriers and obstructive fittings were removed. The street was also completely redone.
In addition to the increasing overall appeal, the issue of accessibility was of considerable importance.

Key features of the new plans included:
 - Repartitioning the cross-section of the road and reorganizing parked vehicles, and making it easier for pedestrians to cross;
 - Increasing the overall attraction by means of uniform paving, highlighting the series of plazas, and increasing the amount of greenery;
 - Renewing the street lighting. This improves road safety, makes it easier to find one’s way around, and makes residents feel safer.

The use of same-size light paving stones for the pedestrian areas created a link in terms of design between the individual plazas, integrated these in the overall “Schäfflestrasse” project and marked a continuation of the design of existing pedestrian areas in the immediate vicinity (Engelsplatz). The three plazas (in front of the Catholic church, the post office, and the parish church of Phillip the Apostle), whose appearance was intended to stand out from the surroundings through the choice of a different color (dark gray), were included in this framework.
In terms of function and design the plaza in front of the Catholic church is divided into two areas:
 - Church forecourt and
 - multi-purpose plaza with facilities
 and was restructured.
 Previously full of various fittings, the plaza in front of the post office was decluttered in terms of function and design. So as to increase the plaza’s transparency, an advertising column, a telephone box, a switching cabinet, a bottle bank, and a used clothing container were removed.
 To replace the above-ground bottle bank, space-saving underground glass containers were installed.
The open space in front of the Protestant church is of special significance ion the urban fabric. Planting trees on the former area of greenery in front of the parish hall created an ensemble comprising church building, plaza, and grove of trees. The church forecourt is a counterpart to the plaza on Am Erlenbruch

Project progress
The project was completed in December 2018. On completion of the Riederwald tunnel, the plaza on Am Erlenbruch, which is at the start of Schäfflestrasse, will be developed in line with the appearance of the other plazas.
