Industry & Commerce

As a business center Frankfurt/Main has global links and is in competition with other important European cities. The international airport and the city’s significance as a financial center determine the way Frankfurt is perceived by the outside world. As the most important regional hub in the metropolitan Rhine-Main region, the city also seeks to position itself business-wise in the Federal Republic of Germany. In particular its favorable location with regard to transportation, be it by air, water, rail or via the intersection that is of significance in the European Interstate system, is a major factor for companies.

Frankfurt’s industrial and commercial areas play a pivotal role in shaping the face of the city and provide a balance in a business hub dominated by the service industry. The fabric of the location is very diverse, spanning industrial parks and inland ports, established commercial estates and those on the drawing board as well as mixes of both. A mixture of industry, commerce, the crafts trades, and services makes for diversity in the labor market. In an integrated approach the city’s development policy pursues an objective that seeks to secure and modernize existing industrial and commercial sites as part of a strategic concept.

Issues such as the purposeful support of commercial parks and craft industry centers, new requirements on the part of computer centers and the development of business areas in conjunction with scientists and researchers are being addressed. Agreement between municipalities and regions with regard to land earmarked for commercial development remains an important aspect.
